About the artwork

I have always been fascinated by the character of poppies. They seem so delicate that a breeze might carry them away, yet their red petals possess an impossible-to-ignore strength. In Poppies on blue., I wanted to capture precisely this contrast: the lightness of the petals and the energy of each flower as it opens.

Against a luminous blue background, red and coral poppies rise to different heights. Some flowers are fully open, revealing their dark centres; others are still little buds, as though waiting for their moment. Their fine green stems bring movement and space to the composition, almost as if the flowers were gently swaying in the air.

I love how the red and blue work together: one vibrant and full of life, the other calm and open. I painted this piece with the simple joy of unexpectedly coming across flowers in mind. I hope it brings a little of that light, freshness and freedom into its new home.

Painted entirely by hand in oils on canvas, the artwork is built with layers of colour and brushwork that reveal the subtle shades and delicate character of the petals.
